A steady stream of drips fell onto the softening ground before the clan leader, slowly creating a miniature marsh as the puddle that was forming swirled around the sprouting blades of newleaf grass. The lake's gentle waves lapped gently against it's banks, and one would have thought that someone who was lucky enough to immerse herself in the beauty of the place would have done so with all the eagerness in the world, yet Dewstar hardly stopped to acknowledge her surroundings as she stared at the ground in a trance, her eyebrows knitted in a frown. Never had the lake risen so high so quickly at the end of leafbare- the pebbly shore that had been visible not so long ago was now completely immersed in water that rose above the treeline during high-tide. The camp's ground was damp and soggy in places, and it was clear that there would be many more mosquitos than usual come greenleaf. She shivered at the thought of the nasty blood suckers whose bite itched worse than fleas, remembering the illness that they had brought last season. 'What we have done to anger Starclan, I can't fathom.' The cinnamon tabby took a step back to dryer ground, wincing as her paws withdrew themselves from the squelching mud beneath them. Count your blessings- at least it isn't hot and humid yet.' Dirty piles of snow still littered the ground, and the weather was bearable.
A few minutes passed before the leader stood, arching her back in a stretch. She looked at the river doubtfully. 'Of course, the fish are all in the middle of the lake. They don't eat pebbles.' Another disadvantage of newleaf was that the water was always filthy. Even Riverclan cats didn't like to swim in muddy water, so she shouldered her way through some reeds and into the heart of her territory, scenting the air cautiously.
