August 26, 2009 Commanding, Time and Again
By GEORGE LOOMIS LUCERNE, SWITZERLAND — Reviews have called it the greatest orchestra in the world. And like a musical performance, it comes into being for a finite period of time and then ceases to exist, though fortunately it reconstitutes itself every summer.
It is the Lucerne Festival Orchestra led by Claudio Abbado. From its debut in 2003, the orchestra — a major initiative of the Lucerne Festival’s artistic director Michael Haefliger — has been a vital component of Mr. Abbado’s sphere of reduced activities. The renowned conductor, who once headed Teatro alla Scala, the Vienna Staatsoper and the Berlin Philharmonic, now leads a very different but remarkably full musical life following his recovery from stomach cancer at start of the decade.
Last weekend in the KKL concert hall, Mr. Abbado and the orchestra gave an achingly beautiful performance of Mahler’s Symphony No.4 in G major that left the audience in rapt silence for more than 30 seconds before it went wild with applause. It was another example of the glorious music-making that the combination of superb personnel and optimal performing conditions can produce.
Mr. Abbado selects the orchestra’s members himself. “I have known most of them for many years,” he said at the lakeside home where he stays during the festival, which runs through Sept. 19 (although Mr. Abbado and the orchestra gave a final performance there on Saturday). “They are wonderful musicians and people. We have sectional rehearsals where the players decide what to do. They play symphonies like chamber music, and that is a rarity.”
His slim appearance gives him an air of fragility and, at 76, he moves judiciously, in part to conserve energy. But with his calmness comes a sense of strength. He uses his words economically, just as he does in rehearsals. “Other conductors explain in detail how they want a passage to go,” said the violist Wolfram Christ, who played under Mr. Abbado in the Berlin Philharmonic. “Claudio communicates with looks and gestures.”
“You can say a lot with eyes, face and hands,” Mr. Abbado acknowledged. “One time I conducted the Boston Symphony and a double bass player said he hoped I would come back. He said, ‘We need your dirty looks when we do something wrong!”’
It may seem paradoxical, given the astonishing precision and nuance of his performances, but Mr. Abbado strives to give his players maximum freedom. “They should feel free to make music — I am there for the construction, not to impose.”
His approach generates enormous affection and admiration. Mr. Abbado’s communicative gifts promote spontaneity and, said Mr. Christ, are “very inspiring.”
The Fourth Symphony brings Mr. Abbado a step closer to a complete DVD Mahler cycle with the festival orchestra (the Ninth, scheduled for next summer, and the Eighth remain); it will be his fourth recorded Mahler cycle.
“With great composers like Mahler, you always find something new and deeper in the music,” he said. Mr. Abbado learned much from studying the Mahler scores of the conductor Willem Mengelberg, which contain Mahler’s own markings. He also said he liked Mahler’s use of imagery from nature to describe his music, such as comparing a sudden modulation to the sight of a valley during a walk through the mountains.
Typically, Mr. Abbado and the festival orchestra follow performances here with a visit to a major city, although New York audiences were disappointed two years ago when he canceled Carnegie Hall appearances for medical reasons unrelated to cancer. Next month, from Sept. 20-25, he and the orchestra will be in Beijing, where Mr. Abbado made a pioneering trip in 1973 with the Vienna Philharmonic. Demand for tickets then was fierce, but Chinese officials accommodated as many people as possible. “I never heard a sound,” Mr. Abbado said, “but every 10 minutes 2,000 people would leave and 2,000 more would come in.”
Along with the festival orchestra, Mr. Abbado mentioned the Berlin Philharmonic and the Orchestra Mozart — an ensemble based in Bologna, Italy, that he founded in 2005 — as organizations with which he appears annually. But further conversation revealed others as well. He works with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, many of whose members form the core of the festival orchestra. Last year with the Mahler he indulged his passion for opera with “Fidelio,” first in Reggio Emilia, Italy, then in four other European cities. They were his first performances ever of the Beethoven opera. He is eager to do Berg’s “Lulu.” Next year he returns to his native city, Milan, for a concert at La Scala, where he made his conducting debut almost 50 years ago.
And every winter he conducts the Simón Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela, the showcase ensemble of José Antonio Abreu’s extraordinary “El Sistema,” the educational system that has given thousands of Venezuelan children a chance to play in an orchestra. “That man is a saint,” Mr. Abbado said, “he achieved a cultural revolution.” At Mr. Abbado’s instigation, Mr. Abreu will come to Fiesole, Italy, next month to work with young Italian musicians drawn, Mr. Abbado said, “from Bolzano to Palermo.”
When Mr. Abbado feels he is doing too much, he will simply cut back and rest. A favorite place to do so is at his villa on Sardinia. Our interview came to an end when it was time for his lunch, another ritual he takes seriously, especially after his illness. It could be that his careful regimen of work, diet and rest keeps him healthier than many people his age. Let’s hope so.
... Woah....

In 1305, the new Pope Clement V, based in France, sent letters to both the Templar Grand Master Jacques de Molay and the Hospitaller Grand Master Fulk de Villaret to discuss the possibility of merging the two Orders. Neither was amenable to the idea, but Pope Clement persisted, and in 1306 he invited both Grand Masters to France to discuss the matter. De Molay arrived first in early 1307, but de Villaret was delayed for several months. While waiting, De Molay and Clement discussed charges that had been made two years prior by an ousted Templar. It was generally agreed that the charges were false, but Clement sent King Philip IV of France a written request for assistance in the investigation. King Philip was already deeply in debt to the Templars from his war with the English and decided to seize upon the rumors for his own purposes. He began pressuring the Church to take action against the Order, as a way of freeing himself from his debts.[23] On Friday, October 13, 1307 (a date sometimes incorrectly linked with the origin of the Friday the 13th superstition)[24][25] Philip ordered de Molay and scores of other French Templars to be simultaneously arrested. The Templars were charged with numerous offenses (including apostasy, idolatry, heresy, obscene rituals and homosexuality, financial corruption and fraud, and secrecy).[26] Many of the accused confessed to these charges under torture, and these confessions, even though obtained under duress, caused a scandal in Paris. After more bullying from Philip, Pope Clement then issued the papal bull Pastoralis Praeeminentiae on November 22, 1307, which instructed all Christian monarchs in Europe to arrest all Templars and seize their assets _________ Templars,I just love history
